Sue Moorhead, PhD, RN, FAAN retired January 2021 as an associate professor at the University of Iowa, College of Nursing. She received a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from the University of Maryland through the Walter Reed Army Institute of Nursing. After receiving her BSN in 1972, Dr. Moorhead was commissioned a 1st Lieutenant in the Army Nurse Corps and served for 27 years. Her master’s and doctoral degrees are both from the University of Iowa.

Dr. Moorhead has been an educator for more than 30 years and served as the director of the Center for Nursing Classification and Clinical Effectiveness (CNC) for 16 years. Her research focuses on the development and implementation of standardized nursing terminologies and effectiveness research. Dr. Moorhead is a co-editor of the Nursing Outcomes Classification (NOC). She has edited 13 books, including six editions of NOC with translations into Chinese, Dutch, French, German, Indonesian, Italian, Jamaica, Japanese, Korean, Norwegian, Portuguese, Slovakian, and Spanish. She has published over 100 articles and 20 book chapters during her academic career. Dr. Moorhead has presented over 190 papers and keynotes in the United States, Australia, Brazil, Canada, Columbia, Czech Republic, Estonia, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Mexico, Netherlands, Nigeria, Peru, Portugal, Slovakia, South Korea, Sweden, Switzerland, Taiwan, and Wales. She has mentored over 30 PhD students, over 50 master’s students and, more recently, 14 DNP student projects. In addition, she has sponsored 15 visiting scholars affiliated with the CNC. Dr. Moorhead's leadership focused on nursing terminologies has been recognized by her induction as a Fellow in the American Academy of Nursing in 2013 and a Founders Award from NANDA International in 2016.
