Dr. Ramey joined the faculty in the College of Nursing in 2006, after serving as an Assistant Professor at Marquette University for three years. Dr. Ramey's program of research investigates the relationships among Cardiovascular Disease (CVD) risk factors and CVD morbidity in large law enforcements cohorts. Her work has encompassed evaluation of biomarkers of stress and cortisol. Most recently, her work with physical activity in police using physical activity monitors, has gained national attention. More than 18 departments have participated in her studies with the Milwaukee Police Department being the largest and Hawaii the most distant. Dr. Ramey’s program of research has progressed from surveillance to intervention development. A project with the Telecommunications Personnel in the Milwaukee Police Department and ongoing work with recruits at the Academy in Milwaukee are validating stress levels and the use of self-regulation techniques to modify heart rate variability.

In 2013, Dr. Ramey was selected by the Department of Justice to join the task force on suicide prevention in law enforcement. She regularly presents her work internationally, including speaking at Cambridge University in 2012 and other international and national conferences including the Royal College of Nursing and the NIH Conference on Total Worker Health. In 2015, Dr. Ramey was invited to testify for the President’s Taskforce on 21st Century Policing in Washington, D.C. Most recently her research is funded by the U.S. Department of Justice. Dr. Ramey has a secondary appointment in the College of Public Health at the University of Iowa and works with graduate students in the Doctorate in Nursing Program and teaches professionalism and public health in the RN-BSN program.
