Dr. Amany Farag is a tenured Associate Professor at the University of Iowa College of Nursing. She completed her PhD and a postdoctoral fellowship at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio. Dr. Farag’s research goals focus on understanding reactive and proactive approaches to enhance patient safety with an emphasis on safe medication administration practices across the care continuum. Dr. Farag’s first line of research (reactive approach) focuses on understanding system and social factors contributing to nurses’ willingness to report medication errors. Her second line of research (proactive approach) focuses on examining system and human factors contributing to nurse fatigue as an important precursor to medication errors. In this line of research, Dr. Farag is aiming to improve nurses’ wellness through investigating measures to: (1) augment nurses’ self-management practices and (2) improve nurses’ work environment and workflow.

In her efforts to achieve her research goals, Dr. Farag is currently collaborating with different interdisciplinary teams. They are using machine learning and artificial intelligence to pursue novel approaches to studying measures to contain medication errors and enhance nurses’ wellness. Her recent projects have been funded by the National Council of State Boards of Nursing (NCSBN), the NIOSH-funded Healthier Workforce Center of the Midwest at the University of Iowa, the CDC-funded University of Iowa Injury Prevention Research Center, and the University of Iowa Institute for Clinical and Translational Science (ICTS). Dr. Farag is a nationally recognized expert in medication errors. She received the Mary Hanna Memorial Journalism Award from the Journal of Peri-Anesthesia Nursing in 2016, and she was named Author of the Year by the Journal of Emergency Medicine in 2018. In 2018, Dr. Farag also received both the Junior Investigator Award from the Midwest Nursing Research Society (MNRS) Health Systems, Policy, and Informatics research interest group and the Rogers Endowed Lectureship Award from Mississippi Medical Center. In 2020, she was appointed co-director of the VA Quality Scholars Program (VAQS), Iowa City site.
