Dr. Alaa AlBashayreh completed his PhD in Nursing and MS in Health Informatics at the University of Iowa where he focused his research on evaluating the extent to which care provided to patients with advanced chronic conditions at end of life is centered around the patient’s goals and treatment preferences. Using artificial intelligence applications such as machine learning and natural language processing, his research illustrated the feasibility of identifying patient-centered outcomes in electronic health record data and clinical notes, including goals-of-care and surrogate decision-maker discussions, screening for symptoms and spiritual and religious concerns, and the intensity and concordance of end-of-life care. Prior to joining the University of Iowa, Dr. AlBashayreh worked as a nurse in Jordan and taught at universities in Jordan, Saudi Arabia, and Oman. Through a Stanley Graduate Award for International Research at the University of Iowa, he conducted research that explored the complexity of end-of-life decision-making and goals-of-care discussions in Jordan. His current research focuses on exploring variations in the timing of palliative care initiation and the impact of palliative care models on healthcare utilization and costs at end of life. With a program of research in the intersections of informatics and data science, patient-centered outcomes, and palliative and end-of-life care, his ultimate research goal is to promote the timely initiation of palliative care and enhance patient-centered care in advanced illness.
