Dr. Sena Chae, PhD, MSHI, RN, joined the College of Nursing as an assistant professor in 2022. She earned her Master of Science degree in Nursing Education and Administration from Yonsei University in Seoul, South Korea, a Master of Science degree in Health Informatics, and her Ph.D. from the University of Iowa. Prior to pursuing her Ph.D., Dr. Chae worked as a perioperative nurse for nine years with multi-disciplinary surgical teams that predominately focused on cancer patients.

Dr. Chae’s program of research focuses on nursing informatics, data-driven solutions to predict patient outcomes, the use of standardized nursing terminology (NIC/NOC), and symptom science. Through her doctoral dissertation, Dr. Chae has determined the feasibility of clustering cancer patients with diverse symptom experiences and predicting cancer symptom experiences using routinely collected nursing documentation. Her current research focuses on developing an algorithm to extract the symptom data from clinical notes and exploring the relationship between multiple chronic conditions and the most commonly occurring symptoms of patients with acute leukemia.
