Daniel J. Liebzeit, PhD, RN
Dr. Liebzeit joined the University of Iowa College of Nursing in 2020, following completion of a post-doctoral fellowship in Geriatrics at the William S. Middleton Memorial Veterans Hospital in Madison, WI. His training and expertise include gerontology and age-friendly care and communities, older adult care transitions, and caregiving and support networks.
To date, Dr. Liebzeit has completed multiple qualitative and quantitative studies to work towards reducing the impact of functional decline and improving health in older adults during hospital-to-home transitions. As he expanded knowledge and definition around older adult hospital-to-home transitions in his early work, this led to more recent focus on supporting older adults across the acute to community care continuum. This includes conducting research on and implementing principles of Age Friendly Health Systems, as the 4Ms framework promotes increased focus on what matters to the older person, a major opportunity identified in his early work. The other 3Ms prompt a focus on medication safety, cognitive and mental health (mentation), and safe mobility, each as key elements of appropriate geriatric care and supporting what matters to the person. On the community side, this includes promoting research and development of age-friendly communities. Dr. Liebzeit is currently working to promote increased age-friendliness in Johnson County, Iowa within the AARP Livable Communities initiative.
Dr. Liebzeit's work also recognizes the importance of unpaid/family caregivers, caregiving networks, and social and professional support networks. There remain significant opportunities to bolster caregiver support and access to key resources for older adults and caregivers. Therefore, each of Dr. Liebzeit's current foci include an emphasis on engaging, supporting, and empowering caregivers, not only in their knowledge and preparation for the caregiver role, but also that they may live and age consistent with their own goals for health and life.
