Dr. Vanessa Kimm joined the College of Nursing Faculty in 2004 and is a Pediatric Nurse Practitioner and Clinical Assistant Professor. She is faculty in the Pediatric Nurse Practitioner Program and has a part-time faculty practice at the Center for Disabilities and Development at the University of Iowa Stead Family Children’s Hospital. She completed the University of Iowa Master of Science in Nursing degree and Pediatric Nurse Practitioner Program in 2003 and completed the Doctor of Nursing Practice program in 2017 with a doctoral project titled "Improving Services for Iowa Children with Autism Using a Framework for Action." As part of this project she helped to spearhead legislative policy requiring mandatory insurance reimbursement for applied behavioral analysis therapy for Iowa children with autism. This bill (House File 215) successfully passed the Iowa House and Senate and was signed into law on March 30, 2017. 

Dr. Kimm has extensive experience practicing in pediatric primary care and has also practiced in autism diagnostic clinics at Mercy Hospital Autism Center in Dubuque, Iowa as well as at the Center for Disabilities and Development at the University of Iowa Stead Family Children’s Hospital in Iowa City, Iowa. She is passionate about underserved populations and has presented nationally and internationally about refugee health and autism spectrum disorders in children. She is also the current past-president of the Iowa Association of Nurse Practitioners, the Iowa chapter of NAPNAP
