Biography

Dr. Chelsea Howland's program of research focuses on chronic disease self-management in underserved rural populations, tailored interventions using mobile health technology, and the use of wearable devices to self-monitor physical activity and sedentary behaviors. She completed her PhD in Nursing Science and a Participatory Health Research certificate at the University of Missouri with a focus on physical activity and sedentary behavior change in rural individuals with type 2 diabetes. As a doctoral student, she was awarded an NIH NINR T32 Pre-Doctoral Fellowship in Health Behavior Science by the University of Missouri. She earned her Master of Science degree in Nursing Education from Southern Illinois University Edwardsville. Dr. Howland’s long-term goals are 1) to develop a mobile application aimed at increasing physical activity and reducing sedentary behaviors in rural individuals with type 2 diabetes and 2) improve access to health resources and reduce health disparities in rural populations.
