When the Midwest Nursing Research Society (MNRS) holds its 41st Annual Research Conference in Minneapolis in April, the research efforts of several UI College of Nursing faculty will be formally recognized and celebrated among peers.
Kicking things off is MNRS’s recognition for excellence in intraprofessional collaboration. Professor Ann Marie McCarthy, PhD, RN, PNP, FAAN, associate dean for research, and Sharon Tucker, PhD, RN, PMHCNS-BC, director, nursing research, evidence-based practice & quality, will be presented with the 2017 Outstanding Partnership Award.
This accolade recognizes the outstanding research partnership between an academic institution (UI’s College of Nursing) and a clinical institution (UIHC’s Department of Nursing). Nominated partnerships are judged on evidence of successful collaborations, including grant proposals, conference presentations and publications.
“This recognition stems from several years of collaborative efforts, so it really belongs to many of our current and former colleagues from both the college and UIHC,” said McCarthy. “This partnership award is the result of years of wonderful collaborations and mutual support in research and evidence-based practice.”

Also notable, College of Nursing faculty member Catherine (Catie) Cherwin, PhD, RN, was selected to receive the 2017 MNRS New Investigator Seed Grant for her research project titled “GI Symptom Clusters in Solid Tumor Chemotherapy Patients.”
Through the study, Cherwin and her team hope to identify GI symptom clusters in patients with solid tumor diagnoses receiving chemotherapy; and, determine if GI symptom clusters are related to symptom interference with daily life or quality of life (QoL).
Cherwin was also recently awarded the 2016 Diana Benz Seed Grant from UI’s Holden Cancer Center for this research project.

Not to be outdone, Assistant Professor, Barb St. Marie, PhD, ANP-BC, GNP-BC, ACHPN, will be receiving the Young Investigator Award from the Pain and Symptom Management Research Interest Group during the MNRS conference.
Dr. St. Marie was also recently elected to the American Pain Society’s board of directors. She joins UI Professor Barbara Rakel in holding both nursing seats on this interdisciplinary board.

All will be recognized at the Society’s upcoming annual research conference, which will be held April 6-9 at the Hyatt Regency in Minneapolis, Minn.
