Assistant Clinical Professor Larry Newman, DNP, RN, AGPCNP-BC, director of the college’s Adult/Geriatric Primary Care Nurse Practitioner program was recently bestowed with the Outstanding Faculty Practice Award by the National Organization of Nurse Practitioner Faculties (NONPF).
NONPF annually selects one nurse practitioner (NP) to receive this prestigious accolade. To receive this award, Dr. Newman established that he maintains active practice in an established NP faculty practice or other clinical setting; provides creative approaches for teaching models of care, evaluation, etc.; demonstrates excellence in integrating practice into the NP faculty role; and maintains outstanding standards of practice.
More specifically, this recognition was based on Dr. Newman’s involvement in an NP-led Chronic and Acute Care Clinic in Iowa City, which is the result of a partnership between the college and the Iowa City Free Medical and Dental Clinic (FMC). Here Dr. Newman works with Barbara Vinograde, FMC executive director, to develop funding opportunities for this clinic. The clinic also provides an opportunity for students to participate by providing care to individuals in Johnson and surrounding counties who do not possess health insurance.
Professor Julie Stanik-Hutt (right) nominated Dr. Newman, who was presented with the award during NONPF’s 45th Annual Conference, which took place in Atlanta last weekend.
The following excerpt is from Dr. Stanik-Hutt’s nomination:
“Dr. Newman is an outstanding clinician and innovative teacher who seamlessly integrates clinical practice with academic responsibilities. He is an expert in community-based care of older adults and a perfect match to lead our AGPCNP program.
“Dr. Newman has extensive experience working with older adults in ‘home-based’ primary care environments as well as long-term care settings. He advances the care of older adults through practice improvement strategies and earns praise from patients, students and clinic administrators for his expert practice.”
